2014 has started with a bang and a string of snow and ice storms. No one has been safe from extreme icy temperatures! If anyone is like me, these dry temps are wreaking havoc on your skin. As soon as the needle drops, I pull out the big moisturizing guns. On those days that my skin is extra parched, I intensify my skincare regimen by adding in a few extra steps of TLC. Let me take you through my super hydrating and brightening routine…

  • Day 1 PM: I start by cleansing with the Grapefruit Face Cleanser and following up with the 10% Glycolic Pads. These have been in my regimen for awhile now so I use them as an overnight treatment, but if you are new to the pads, rinse with water and moisturize 20 minutes after applying. The 10% Glycolic Pads deeply exfoliate and reveal a brightened, dewy complexion! I call these guys “new face” because you wake up with new face.
  • Day 2 PM: The Detox Face Mask is a deep cleanse and deep moisturizer that uses stable vitamin C, green tea and soy to instantly brighten. Your skin is left thoroughly cleansed, dewy and soft. Then I follow up with the Replenishing Face Serum. Our hyaluronic acid serum plumps up skin, fills in fine lines and draws moisture in deeper. It’s the perfect base for the last and final step – Replenishing Face Cream. Our Replenishing Face Cream is a rich damage repair focused cream that uses vitamins a, b, c and e to protect, and avocado and watermelon to repair.

Beauty Tips to look and feel your best in 2013!

03.14.2013 | Posted by MALIN+GOETZ in Advice, Apothecary and Lab, Lifestyle, Products, Skin Stories | No comments

  1. Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen.

Not to sound like a broken record, but did you know that the sun is the #1 cause of ageing? Whether it’s au natural or from a tanning bed, UV rays will cause wrinkles, hyper-pigmentation and other scary forms of skin damage. The only way to protect your skin from uva and uvb rays is to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day. Make it easy on yourself and find a moisturizer and spf in one. Me? I use the Malin+Goetz SPF 15 every day because it hydrates without adding oil, protects my porcelain skin from the sun and is a makeup primer all in one. Excuse me, I need to go get my healthy dose of vitamin D.

  1. Wash your face. Repeat.

Washing your face every day is essential to keeping those pores clean and as tiny as possible. No one likes breaking out, but there’s an easy solution to tackle the never-ending battle against pesky pimples… Wash. Your. Face. Sure, it’s a task, and one I’m not always excited to check off my list, but I leave myself no other option before pouring myself into bed. And, I see results. Not only do your pores benefit, but your moisturizes and creams don’t have to work as hard to penetrate your skin. Get on board.

  1. Hydrate Inside + Out.

We’ve all heard it before, “Drink 8 cups of water a day.” And while the amount varies, the principle holds true, our bodies depend on water to function on a day-to-day basis. The same goes for moisturizing! Everyone needs it, no matter the skin type. Hydrating the skin combats ageing, douses it with vitamins and keeps it bright. Just remember about our friend, SPF during the am, and you’re well on your way to rocking your 60s Helen Mirren style.

  1. ZZZZzzzzz

It seems there is nothing a good night’s rest can’t do for you. Fresh face? Check. Memory booster? Check. Stress reducer? Check. Get your 40 winks and live an all-over healthier and happier life.

  1. Exfoliate.

Did you know that exfoliating on a regular basis helps remove that dead layer of skin and reveals a dewy, youthful complexion? Well, it does. Exfoliating speeds up the cell renewal processing, reducing the appearance of fine lines and discoloration (damn you, sun.). All well-rounded skincare regimens have one. Don’t be the odd man out, exfoliate that face with the Malin+Goetz Jojoba Face Scrub. It’s a gentle cream-based manual exfoliator that doesn’t cause micro tears in the skin, but gently rolls dead skin away. Or, if you’re feeling really adventurous, check out the Malin+Goetz 10% Glycolic Pads…Get in line for a new face.

  1. GREENS!

Turns out your mom was right, eat your vegetables. Not only are they good for you, with their power punch of nutrients, they also contain antioxidants which fight free radicals that cause ageing from the inside out. Whoa. Pass the brussel sprouts.

  1. :]

We know the age-old saying – it takes more muscles to frown than to smile… Hello wrinkles. Smiling boosts your mood and immune system, and makes you more attractive. It’s an instant and cost-free face lift!

  1. Keep your mitts off your mug.

Your hands are covered in bacteria and oil and it transfers right over to your face when you can’t keep your hands off! You just committed to washing your face daily, don’t ruin your beautiful work.

  1. Fats, but only the healthy kinds.

Healthy fats not only taste good (mmm, avocado), but they help the body absorb nutrients. Get healthy fats through olive oil, nuts and olives. Get to snackin’.

  1. Take time for you.

One of the biggest mistakes we can all be guilty of is not taking time out for ourselves. Whether a walk in the park or a yoga class, allowing your mind and body time to decompress is part of a healthy lifestyle. Perfect that downward dog.

Boyziliance!

12.12.2012 | Posted by MALIN+GOETZ in Apothecary and Lab, Lifestyle, Locations, Products, Skin Stories

HAIR REMOVAL is nothing new to women.  Shaving legs, plucking brows, bikini waxes and beyond–it is something modern women do (unless of course you are a part of some rebellious, feminist pro-hair counter culture).  Men, on the other hand, have traditionally had the good fortune to be decidedly more low maintenance, shaving their beard when they have to.

Fast forward to the early 2000s “metrosexual”–a man meticulous about grooming.  He typically spends time and money on shopping as seen on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. Pandora’s box is open and women now expect a new level of hygiene from their men. If their perfect gay best friend can do it then why can’t their boyfriends and husbands?!

You may already know that MALIN+GOETZ is available at some of the best stores, salons and spas around the world. This includes Strip – a Singapore based waxing studio with an uber-hip outpost in the super-chic Nolita neighborhood here in Manhattan.  Founder Cynthia Chua, the original smooth operator, believed that there was a place for body culture that is practiced safely, hygienically and painlessly. So, she set about seeding the beginnings of a wax revolution.  Selflessly, she trialed and tested new techniques and experimented with new waxes. Eventually, she created a brand new set of Brazilian waxing techniques that was significantly less painful and embarrassing.

We have worked with them for several years now, and every time I visit them to train and work with their staff, they always invite me for a Boyzilian (Brazilian for guys).  Being newly single and back on the market I thought “why not”? It’s competitive out there and every little bit helps!  Now don’t think I made this decision lightly–thinking it was going to be one of the most painful things I have ever experienced (but, pain is beauty, right?). I could not have been more wrong.

Upon my arrival I was greeted by Cameron and Ramon – both of whom are a pleasure.  Then, off to my treatment room with Elyana, my technician. She was friendly, quick and efficient, ensuring I was not in any discomfort, queuing me to “breath” and to “brace myself.”  It was all over in an eye-blink, and I had over-hyped it in my head.  The whole process was virtually painless!  For post waxing she used the MALIN+GOETZ Ingrown Hair Cream, developed for Strip and just such occasions.  I could not be happier with the experience and will definitely be back for another Boyzilian and more!

So what is the point of my disclosing all of this pretty personal information?  Feeling “free” to indulge and look your best!  And, in case you’re curious, you can keep as much grass on the lawn as you wish.

Summer in the City – We’re Melting!

07.05.2012 | Posted by MALIN+GOETZ in Advice, Apothecary and Lab, Lifestyle, Locations, Skin Stories

There is no doubt about it – it’s hot outside. Very hot! And from the looks of the extended forecast, we better get used to it. I love summer as much as anyone, but when it’s too hot for me to lay out on the patio and attempt to get a healthy glow, that’s a problem. It is incredibly gross and uncomfortable outside – and unlike most of the country that is able to get from point A to point B in an air conditioned vehicle, we here in NYC are forced to navigate the steamy streets of what feels literally like a concrete jungle. Now more than ever, it’s important, nay – a matter of survival – to find little ways to make getting through the day more comfortable, even if just slightly.

One thing I like to do is keep all of my summer fragrances in the refrigerator. This not only helps to keep your favorite fragrances fresher longer, but feels incredibly refreshing when you spritz it on in the morning. My favorite at the moment is the M+G Lime Tonic. It’s light and crisp and even on the hottest, most humid days, it is never overwhelming or cloying. So crisp in fact, that I’ve been known to wear a spritz of this to the pool or the beach!

When I get home at the end of the day, and I feel like a gross, sweaty beast of a human being, I immediately jump in the shower and grab my other summer time staple – the Peppermint Body Scrub. Not only is it great for exfoliating and smoothing out your heels (which if you’re going to wear sandals at all is a MUST), but the natural peppermint extract physically cools off your body. It is at the same time calming and rejuvenating.

Now it’s time to relax. If you’re like me, the air conditioner got turned on as soon as you walked through the door, but if you haven’t already done so, turn it on now! Settle in, grab a good book or turn on your favorite TV show, and light the Mojito Candle – the crisp scent of spearmint, lime, and basil will remind you of all that is good about summer. But if you need a little extra convincing, mix yourself up a REAL mojito. Our empty candle glasses make for perfect cocktail tumblers.

Now think cool thoughts and enjoy the summer – winter will be here before we know it, and we’ll be yearning for these days once again!

Skin Stories: Christy’s Rosacea

07.11.2011 | Posted by MALIN+GOETZ in Advice, Skin Conditions, Skin Stories

First in an ongoing series of customer stories, Christy shares her tips on living with Rosacea.

“I first dealt with the horrors of Rosacea as a young adult. Recently out of college, first “real” job, and a live-in boyfriend. And suddenly — bright magenta spots, painful skin, and a 70+ year old dermatologist who told me to “take some antibiotics, never use soap, sunscreen, moisturizer, or makeup, and to stop taking any medication that would interfere with said antibiotics.”

Oof. This was not looking good – literally or figuratively.

Medication stabilized things, but I could never seem to find the right products to make my skin truly clear. I would just get to a place where I could slather on enough makeup where I felt I could go out in public. The red, patchy skin was always lurking underneath. And since the list of things that elicit a Rosacea flare-up seem to include: nothing hot, nothing cold, nothing spicy, nothing bland, nothing bright, nothing dark, and ‘no breathing’, I realized that this was something I was going to have to deal with my whole life. And, that I was not happy with always having skin that hurt and was embarrassed to show to the world without a Tammy Faye-esque makeup job.

Then one afternoon I visited a local salon, and they had a special Rosacea facial. And they used products for that treatment, and recommended others, that were by a company I hadn’t heard of…you guessed it: Malin + Goetz. Suddenly there was a moisturizer I could use that actually pampered and protected my skin! And since the grapefruit cleanser complemented the moisturizer, and was also so natural and gentle, I had a soap that cleansed and nourished too.

It has been several years since I discovered the company that truly helped me ‘save face’. And I’m very grateful. I know it is a true success story recently because an acquaintance told me, “You’re so lucky – you have the BEST skin…what do you use?” I figured she must be talking to someone else, because I still didn’t think of myself as someone who had anything but the bumps, the redness, and the flakiness of a Rosacea sufferer. But that night when I looked into the mirror after washing my face, I realized that she was right – it’s not perfect, but it is healthy, smooth, and radiant.

So here are my tips on living with Rosacea. Not everything will work for everyone, but give it a whirl:

  1. If you don’t care for your skin, it will not get better. Get thee to a dermatologist! (Not a cranky old dude, though.
  2. Cleansing and gentle moisturizing are key — Malin + Goetz Grapefruit Face Cleanser and the fabulous Vitamin E Moisturizer work well together and are light and fresh.
  3. Cleansing with lukewarm water with clean hands and no washcloth has worked well for me – even the finest Egyptian cotton isn’t soothing when you are rubbing it all over sensitive skin.
  4. If you wear makeup: — after many trials (and tribulations) I’ve found that cosmetics that use minerals or the most natural possible ingredients work best to both mask Rosacea, as well as not promote flare-ups.
  5. SPF, baby! With as little grease as possible.
  6. What you use on your hair and hands can have an effect on the skin on your face. Think about it — the products you use in the shower to wash your hair come streaming down your face when you rinse. If there are a ton of chemicals or a trigger ingredient, it can cause a flare-up. Once I switched to a more natural shampoo + conditioner (by guess who?) I noticed a wonderful difference.
  7. Drink lots of water. Doesn’t every helpful list include this? Well, it appears there for a reason.
  8. If you do use cosmetics, don’t go to sleep in them! Wash that face! Same thing if you’ve worked out.
  9. Find a gentle laundry detergent — especially for your pillowcases! And change them more than once a week if you are having a breakout or particularly oily day. And if those pillows are old, break down and treat yourself to some new ones.
  10. Realize that you are more than your worst skin day – you’re gorgeous, and you deserve to take good care of your face. It’s the only one you’ve got!”
