Summer in the City – We’re Melting!

07.05.2012 | Posted by MALIN+GOETZ in Advice, Apothecary and Lab, Lifestyle, Locations, Skin Stories

There is no doubt about it – it’s hot outside. Very hot! And from the looks of the extended forecast, we better get used to it. I love summer as much as anyone, but when it’s too hot for me to lay out on the patio and attempt to get a healthy glow, that’s a problem. It is incredibly gross and uncomfortable outside – and unlike most of the country that is able to get from point A to point B in an air conditioned vehicle, we here in NYC are forced to navigate the steamy streets of what feels literally like a concrete jungle. Now more than ever, it’s important, nay – a matter of survival – to find little ways to make getting through the day more comfortable, even if just slightly.

One thing I like to do is keep all of my summer fragrances in the refrigerator. This not only helps to keep your favorite fragrances fresher longer, but feels incredibly refreshing when you spritz it on in the morning. My favorite at the moment is the M+G Lime Tonic. It’s light and crisp and even on the hottest, most humid days, it is never overwhelming or cloying. So crisp in fact, that I’ve been known to wear a spritz of this to the pool or the beach!

When I get home at the end of the day, and I feel like a gross, sweaty beast of a human being, I immediately jump in the shower and grab my other summer time staple – the Peppermint Body Scrub. Not only is it great for exfoliating and smoothing out your heels (which if you’re going to wear sandals at all is a MUST), but the natural peppermint extract physically cools off your body. It is at the same time calming and rejuvenating.

Now it’s time to relax. If you’re like me, the air conditioner got turned on as soon as you walked through the door, but if you haven’t already done so, turn it on now! Settle in, grab a good book or turn on your favorite TV show, and light the Mojito Candle – the crisp scent of spearmint, lime, and basil will remind you of all that is good about summer. But if you need a little extra convincing, mix yourself up a REAL mojito. Our empty candle glasses make for perfect cocktail tumblers.

Now think cool thoughts and enjoy the summer – winter will be here before we know it, and we’ll be yearning for these days once again!

Spring Forward with Your Fragrance

03.12.2012 | Posted by MALIN+GOETZ in Advice, Apothecary and Lab, Lifestyle, Products

Now that it appears as if spring is here to stay in New York City, I’m excited to change up my daily wardrobe. I shaved the beard I had been sporting all winter, broke out a brightly colored shirt to wear to work and am just looking to generally lightening things up – including my daily fragrance. Wearing a fragrance daily is just as essential to me as is wearing a fresh pair of knickers! However, one can’t wear just any fragrance any time. Just like you wouldn’t wear a wool blazer in the middle of July, you also wouldn’t wear a fragrance with notes such as sandalwood or black pepper.

Spring is an optimistic time. The days are longer, flowers are blooming and as such, your fragrance should feel equally as bright, fresh and uplifting. For me, one go to fragrance from early spring through mid-September is the Lime Tonic by M+G – a crisp and clean scent that feels appropriate to wear no matter how high the temperature goes or whether you find yourself partying on a roof top in the city or hanging with friends at the beach.

The real beauty of the Lime Tonic and every other fragrance by M+G is that while each is distinctly beautiful on it’s own, they can be paired together to create a uniquely dynamic personal fragrance. For day time I love pairing the Lime + Petigrain Tonics; a bright, succulent blend of citrus, woodsy and green notes. When the sun goes down and it’s time to really play, I want a warmer more sensual scent, but never anything that’s going to be cloying or overwhelming. For this, I take the warm and sexy Rum Tonic and lighten it up with a light spritz of Lime Tonic; all coming together to create a truly unique fragrance that definitely draws people closer to figure out just what you are wearing.

Experiment with different blends and see what feels the most authentic and you. The point is to have fun with it!

Getting Kissable for Valentine’s Day!

02.06.2012 | Posted by MALIN+GOETZ in Advice, Apothecary and Lab, Lifestyle, Products

Valentine’s Day. Whether you consider it to be the most romantic day of the year, the most depressing, or a ridiculous commercial creation, everyone secretly hopes to have a special someone to spend the day (and more importantly, the night) with. Mostly people would probably agree with me that the difference between a great date and a disaster can be something as simple as a kiss. Before technique and the perfect head tilt, the lips lay the foundation for a truly mind blowing kiss. Therefore, it’s essential to make your lips as irresistible as possible. One of the best ways to help do this is to exfoliate them. You already (hopefully!) exfoliate your face and body, so why not your lips? Valentine’s Day falls right in the middle of the bleakest part of winter, when lips are dry and chapped – and sometimes lip moisturizer just isn’t enough. The Jojoba Face Scrub by Malin+Goetz is perfect for such a job. It’s gentle, yet superbly effective. While you’re exfoliating your face simply purse those lips and spend a couple of extra seconds gently going over them in a circular motion (hint: something I love to do to up the ante is add a little bit of the M+G Peppermint Body Scrub). Once you rinse off, just apply a light layer of Lip Moisturizer and you’re good to go. Your lips will be impossibly soft and supple – sure to encourage lingering!

Here’s hoping cupid’s arrow finds all of you – there’s still a week left!

Gluten-Free Skin Care

01.23.2012 | Posted by MALIN+GOETZ in Advice, Apothecary and Lab, Lifestyle, Products

Recently we received a question regarding the gluten content of our products. Until recently, I had no idea that cosmetics and personal grooming products could even contain gluten; I had always thought it was the ingredient du jour that yogis and the body conscious among us were trying to avoid. After researching the matter further, I realized that gluten is not only found in food products, but all sorts of cosmetic products. In fact, a medical study was released in October 2011 which reviewed products from the top 10 cosmetics brands in the United States, and of these 10 only 2 offered detailed ingredient information. Not one of them offered gluten free products.

Let’s start with answering the question of what gluten even is. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley. That may seem specific enough, but gluten can be found in products as varied as sausages, toothpaste, salad dressing and some lipsticks. For most of us this is not an issue, but for at least 1 in 100 of us (and the number is rising) this creates a real health concern. Some people have a gluten sensitivity known as Celiac disease,  a condition in which the body’s immune system treats this protein like an invader, damaging the small intestine. This can cause abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea, even malnutrition.  Not cute.

Now back to the original question, do Malin+Goetz products contain gluten? The simple answer to this question, is no. However, I know a simple no will not satisfy all of you, and some will dissect the ingredient list, so for the sake of full disclosure, some of our products contain (gluten free) wheat germ oil and an oat derivative; these products are the Sage Styling Cream, Replenishing Face Cream and Vitamin B5 Hand Treatment. If you are concerned by this, please check with your doctor.

On another note, questions like these are great, as they don’t just educate you the consumer, but also provide an opportunity for me to further educate myself.  Feel free to ask away!

Decompressing After the Season of Indulgence

01.06.2012 | Posted by MALIN+GOETZ in Advice, Apothecary and Lab, Lifestyle, Locations, Skin Conditions

Congratulations – if you are reading this, then you have survived the crazy, frenetic season known broadly as “The Holidays”. Your wallet may be a little lighter, stomach a little fuller and a feeling that can probably be described simply as being “burnt out” has set in. Though you may be feeling tired, you don’t have to look it. Malin+Goetz offers some fantastic problem+solution products to revive and freshen tired looking complexions.

The Detox Face Mask ($40 and winner of the Allure Beauty Award for Best Face mask) is a simple, oxygenating gel mask that opens the pours and deeply cleanses black heads and impurities, while at the same time infusing the skin with oxygen, green tea extract and stable vitamin c. The result is a dewy soft, refreshed and brightened complexion.

If you’re like me, you’ve been getting extra festive for the holidays, and a simple moisturizer may not be quite enough for thirsty, tired skin. One of my favorite products in the entire line is the Replenishing Face Serum ($68), which utilizes tried and true hyaluronic acid to pull your moisturizer as well as moisture from the air deeper into the skin, helping to smooth out and plump up any lines and wrinkles that may be appearing a bit deeper than usual. It also gives your skin an instant brightness and clarity, and who’s going to say no to that?

So whether you rang in the New Year at a posh cocktail party, a wild rager, or just on your couch with a bottle of champagne, don’t let it interfere with looking your best doing it – we make it easy!

Have a happy and healthy everyone – we’ve made it into 2012!
