Getting Kissable for Valentine’s Day!

02.06.2012 | Posted by MALIN+GOETZ in Apothecary and Lab, Products, Advice, Lifestyle

Valentine’s Day. Whether you consider it to be the most romantic day of the year, the most depressing, or a ridiculous commercial creation, everyone secretly hopes to have a special someone to spend the day (and more importantly, the night) with. Mostly people would probably agree with me that the difference between a great date and a disaster can be something as simple as a kiss. Before technique and the perfect head tilt, the lips lay the foundation for a truly mind blowing kiss. Therefore, it’s essential to make your lips as irresistible as possible. One of the best ways to help do this is to exfoliate them. You already (hopefully!) exfoliate your face and body, so why not your lips? Valentine’s Day falls right in the middle of the bleakest part of winter, when lips are dry and chapped – and sometimes lip moisturizer just isn’t enough. The Jojoba Face Scrub by Malin+Goetz is perfect for such a job. It’s gentle, yet superbly effective. While you’re exfoliating your face simply purse those lips and spend a couple of extra seconds gently going over them in a circular motion (hint: something I love to do to up the ante is add a little bit of the M+G Peppermint Body Scrub). Once you rinse off, just apply a light layer of Lip Moisturizer and you’re good to go. Your lips will be impossibly soft and supple – sure to encourage lingering!

Here’s hoping cupid’s arrow finds all of you – there’s still a week left!

Looking Fresh from Day to Night During the Frenetic Holiday Season

12.22.2011 | Posted by MALIN+GOETZ in Apothecary and Lab, Products, Advice, Lifestyle

It’s that time of year again – we’re in the thick of holiday party season. I don’t know about everyone else out there, but I rarely have time after work to run home and do a full on freshen up session as I’d like to. However, a crazy day at the office is no excuse to show up to your holiday festivities not looking fresh and your absolutely best.

Admittedly, it’s a bit easier for me than for most to freshen up at work considering I’m surrounded by amazing products all day, but what I’m about to tell you is easy, low maintenance and anyone can do it anywhere. Our Detox Face Mask is the first step to fresh, dewy skin on the go. A face mask probably seems like one of the last things you can do with ease “on the go”, but the awesome thing about this mask is it doesn’t even require any water; it’s a gel that you simply massage onto a dry face and leave on for 5 minutes. Do this in the privacy of your office or the loo, because it does foam up and you’ll look a little silly, but it’s way worth it! It is an extremely deep cleansing max that also leave the skin intensely hydrated. After 5 minutes you can simply tissue it off.

Next comes my favorite part. Once you tissue off the gel from the Detox Face Mask, apply 2 or 3 drops of our Replenishing Face Serum for an instantly bright, refreshed complexion. That’s it – now you will look as if you had the luxury of making a stop at home before the party. And for the ladies, it makes the perfect primer to freshen up your makeup on your way out! Now go eat, drink and be all sorts of merry!

Now I have to run – it’s time for the Malin+Goetz staff holiday party!

Happy Holidays!

A Less Is More Approach

11.23.2011 | Posted by MALIN+GOETZ in Apothecary and Lab, Advice, Lifestyle, Locations, Skin Conditions

Back when I was a teenager (all of 14), and thumbing through the pages of GQ for the first time, I gained a fast appreciation for the finer things in life – including great skincare. I came to understand from reading editorials, seeing advertisements, and going into sensory overload on the main floor of department stores, that there was a wide array of options when it came to skincare. Despite the overwhelming amount of options, one thing my 14 year old mind internalized was: Cleanse, Tone, Moisturize. It didn’t matter what brand I bought, as long as I followed three steps (and as long as I bought it from an expensive store), I was set.

In the years following, I experimented with countless brands and was occasionally wooed by the glossies (Vogue says Gwyneth Paltrow uses a lotion from a certain store on Spring Street – Must.Go.Buy!).  But I would always come back to these simple three steps. Yet, no matter how much I was told I needed all three, it didn’t seem to quite work for me. As I became more educated and stopped being an advertising zombie, I realized my skin didn’t need to be toned; that a cleanser and a moisturizer was sufficient. Surely if I was coming to this realization, others must feel the same. I started paying attention to trends and certain brands seemed to begin taking a more minimalist approach to things. It was around this time that I first discovered Malin+Goetz, with their less is more approach to skincare. Since then I have more or less lived my skincare routine by this doctrine.

Having followed this belief for so long, you could imagine my shock upon reading a recent New York Times article which sited several brands coming out with not fewer steps, but more. Not 2 or 3 more steps, but up to 11! Eleven products that one has to go out and spend their hard earned money on, and then spend even more of their valuable time in front of the bathroom mirror applying. As I read on, it was clear that these extra products were not being introduced to us because they are a necessity; they are being created because the Asian market happens to favor a long, drawn out facial regimen and will spend money on all of these products. The funny thing is, representatives from certain brands were blatantly saying they will produce anything and everything that someone will spend money on.

As an employee of, and a loyal user of Malin+Goetz, I can proudly say that over the years, in light of the continued growth and evolution of the company the core philosophy of simplicity and honesty still very much holds true. Yes, new products have been introduced, but they fill a void or meet the needs and requests of our customers. We are never saying these few additional “problem+solution” products are essential to everyone and must be used as part of your daily regimen.

In these complicated and unsure economic times, the last thing that should cause stress or financial hardship is your skincare routine. Our core concept of balance doesn’t just apply to a single great cleanser and a single moisturizer, but also to the balance between luxury and efficiency.

Adult Acne

09.28.2011 | Posted by MALIN+GOETZ in Advice, Skin Conditions

“I am 30 and have occasional acne. Why?”

If you notice the acne that you had when you were 15 has returned, rest assured, you are not alone. One in five women and men between 25 and 45 suffer from adult acne. Unfortunately, women tend to be more prone to acne than men, and, many adults will get the occasional break out – we live in dirty cities!

There are several causes of adult acne: stress, hormones, cosmetics, and simply using too many products that strip your skin (forcing it to produce twice as much oil) and clog your pores. Acne usually begins with blackheads or oil and dead skin cells trapped in a pore with bacteria. Red pimples develop when blackheads become inflamed, spreading when touched with dirty hands.

Picking the right products to treat adult acne is key. Keep in mind, the typical products you used as a teenager will not work on adult skin. Here are our MALIN+GOETZ suggestions:

Immediate Treatment

Acne Treatment: Sometimes the occasional random pimple can’t be helped. To get rid of an existing or developing pimple quickly, try our Acne Treatment. The magic ingredient is 10% Sulfur (the highest amount allowed as an over the counter drug). Sulfer dries the spot and kills the bacteria that caused it. Zinc and organic camphour prevent drying, redness or scarring. Leave it on overnight and by morning it will be gone!

Maintenance and Prevention

Grapefruit Face Cleanser: A gentle but thorough daily cleanser is an essential first step (for everything, FYI). Our Cleanser lifts pore-clogging oil, dirt and makeup from the skin while natural grapefruit extract kills the bacteria causing acne. Cleanse morning and night, but more often or over-washing can strip the skin’s natural oils (so can toners, astringents and harsh cleansers) and force it to produce more oil, clogging pores, etc. – very counterproductive! And remember, use warm water as hot water can be drying and irritating to sensitive skin.

Vitamin E Face Moisturizer: Now that the face is clean, choose the right moisturizer to pH balance the skin. Our Vitamin E Face Moisturizer is intensely hydrating AND oil free choice, so it won’t clog your pores or leave any sort of greasy residue. Great for under make up and day and night use in general.

Detox Face Mask: A deep cleansing once or twice a week can help reinforce the efforts to clear and prevent break outs. Unlike traditional clay masks that can be drying, our Detox Face Mask is a hydrating gentle gel. In 5 easy minutes, the gel oxygenates or foams, opening pores to pull impurities to the surface. Rinse off. Don’t wash before or after—it is also a cleanser. Skin is deeply cleansed and intensely hydrated for bright clarity! Instant results. (Guys, you can shave the foam off as well!)

Dry Scalp and Dandruff

09.20.2011 | Posted by MALIN+GOETZ in Advice, Skin Conditions

“What is the difference between your three shampoos? I like and use the Moisturizing Shampoo. Which one should I use with the Cilantro Hair Conditioner if I have dandruff and dry scalp?”

We have several thoughts regarding dandruff and dry scalp and each shampoo and conditioners use. First, please know that all of our hair care is appropriate for any processed hair, including Brazilian Straightening.

Moisturizing Shampoo and Cilantro Conditioner: If you are currently using the Moisturizing Shampoo with the Cilantro Conditioner and it works – stick with it! All of our hair care products are designed to address the scalp without irritation, and the Moisturizing Shampoo is formulated to be intensely hydrating for dry and damaged hair and dry scalp. Our Cilantro Conditioner is a great compliment to any of our three shampoos as a daily conditioner for both the hair and scalp. It is nourishing, hydrating and absorbent (like all of our moisturizers, it is a botanical fatty acid base so that it absorbs without residue and irritation), and an excellent follow up to any of the cleansers. If you feel you need additional hydration, our Intensive Hair Mask may be integrated once a week and can also be used as a daily conditioner when more is needed.

Peppermint Shampoo: Is a daily use cleanser designed to be naturally hydrating and gently clarifying without drying or stripping. It is a great daily shampoo to use on its own and as an alternate to the Moisturizing Shampoo. Adding the Peppermint Shampoo a few times per week in place of the Moisturizing Shampoo may help remove dry skin build up and leave you with a more “clean” feeling.

Gentle Neroli Shampoo: Is a daily use shampoo designed for sensitive scalp and for frequent washing. It is quite soothing and calming and ideal for individuals who wash their frequently (perhaps you wash a second time after the gym or swimming, etc.) and/or have sensitive scalp conditions. It can be a nice alternative to our Peppermint Shampoo if you do not like peppermint.

Styling and Leave-in Conditioning: We offer two great styling products, Sage Styling Cream and Hair Pomade, both are natural fixatives, the pomade being firmer. In some cases, the fixatives can be drying to a scalp already irritated or prone to dryness. We would recommend using them more on the ends of the hair for styling and avoid the scalp altogether. For Leave-in Conditioning and Styling, both our Cilantro Conditioner and our Intensive Hair Mask provide options as light, leave-in conditioners. For the hair, they can offer texture and direction (finer hair would use the Cilantro Conditioner and damaged, course, and dry hair the Intensive Hair Mask) when used sparingly. For the scalp, you can massage a little into the scalp after washing and upon towel drying. This will continually moisturize the scalp throughout the day to combat dryness.
