New York Times-T The Moment
Beauty June 19, 2009,Vain Glorious | (Malin+Goetz) on the UWS By Sandra Ballentine
Senior editor and beauty guru Sandra Ballentine breaks down the latest spas, salons and products for your aesthetic pleasure.
Who: Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz.
What: A new location of their (Malin+Goetz) Apothecary and Lab.
Where: 455 Amsterdam Avenue, (212) 799-1200.
Why Bother: This unisex line is great for those who prefer to skip irritating ingredients, overpowering scents or fussy packaging. The partners pride themselves on producing products that straddle science and nature (without harming any animals along the way).
How Does It Look? The new space, designed by the Brooklyn-based Konyk Architecture, is an unexpected mix of slick white display areas and handsome walnut boiserie salvaged from a mansion on Long Island’s Gold Coast. The kitschy sign on the facade — La Gran Esquina — is a remnant of the store’s previous incarnation as a barber shop, and traces of the old hair-cutting establishment have been preserved in the interior, as well.
What to Get: The new Moisturizing Shampoo ($25) and Intensive Hair Mask ($25) leave your locks silky and fresh-smelling, while the company’s latest fragrances, Synthesized Geranium and Petitgrain Tonic, may become my favorite summer spritzes. I’ve long been a fan of the yummy-smelling hand washes, especially the rum-scented one. And call me booze-obsessed, but I’m also attracted to the boys’ new Mojito lip balm ($12), made with 10 Cane rum. Just think of it as a cocktail without the calories.
